Fruit and Vegetables on a Diet 

Itís common knowledge that fruit and vegetables are healthy for us. How many times did you mother tell you a child to eat your greens or how often have we read about 5 a day?


Of course, some vegetables have more vitamin c than others and others contain a lot of sugar, they are full of vitamins and minerals, great for our general well being and digestion. They are also essential if we want to lose weight. Vitamin A, C, E, iron and fibre are amongst the nutrients contained in fruit and vegetables. Moist vegetables are low on the Glycaemic Index, contain antioxidants and are high in fibre. Food low on the Glycaemic Index are digested slowly, making you feel fuller longer and quelling hunger pangs, hence they are great if you want to lose weight or are already on a diet.

Many studies have shown that eating at last five a day, every day, may make you less prone to certain diseases like cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.


The majority of people in Britain donít eat enough fruit and vegetables each day. If you think you donít really like fruit, then why not try something exotic, like papaya or mango? Or add fruit to your cereal at breakfast, using skimmed milk of course. You can, of course stew fruit, like rhubarb and apple, and eat it with a little low fat custard as a tasty dessert, for example. Or, why not core an apple, stuff it with nuts and dried fruit, sprinkle on a little cinnamon and bake it on the oven for dessert.

If you like fresh fruit, then keep some in your desk or fridge at work for a snack, but donít eat too much as it does contain sugar. So, if you are on a diet or have lost weight and want to stabilize your weight, then donĎt eat more than 2 pieces a day. Go for apples, bananas and berries, for example, as all are low on the GI. Try and avoid bananas, as they are high in both fat and sugar.  Or why not have a fresh fruit salad for breakfast and have your fruit intake for the day. You can eat it alone, without extra sugar, or add a little low fat yogurt.

Smoothies are also totally trendy and a great way to start the day. If youíre in a hurry, then grab one on the way to work. You can buy them almost everywhere, but make sure that you get a low fat or diet one, if you go for the type with yogurt.

Milk shakes are of course another healthy way to enjoy fruit. Use skimmed milk and fresh fruit, which will give you an array of vitamins and minerals.
