This diet from France first hit the UK market in the spring following many articles about it in the British press. Dr Pierre Dukan, a French nutritionist, is the brains behind the Dukan diet. His philosophy is that if you have one day a week when you eat only protein and nothing else, then you’ll stay thin. These days are called “Protein Thursdays.”
In France over one and a half million women have lost weight on the Dukan Diet, the author claims. The diet is now also big in the US, with stars like Jennifer Lopez showing off her new figure, after having children, and they say all thanks to the Dukan Diet.
If you take follow this diet, then you are supposed to lose as much as 6kg (almost a stone) per month. The diet also allows you to eat what you like, within reason, except on those days when you have to eat only protein, of course.
Many believe that it’s the new Atkins Diet, as it is gaining popularity rapidly.
There are four phases or stages in this Dukan Diet.
The first stage is called “Attack.” You can think of this phase as attacking the start of your diet, getting you ready and boosting your will power to carry on. During this stage you eat only protein, in the form of meat, fish and low fat dairy products.
The meat that you eat should be lean, containing a maximum of 10% fat, such as turkey, chicken and lean beef. Avoid fatty meat like duck and goose. The meat should not be fried, but boiled, grilled or roasted. You can also eat delicatessen meats, offal and tongue.
As fish and seafood are very healthy, you can eat these in abundance. There’s no limit on what kind of products you eat, the fish can even be oily fish, like salmon or low fat white fish. Again, go for lean, low fat cooking methods, such as grilling, roasting, steaming and boiling. Don’t coat the fish in anything, fry or serve with fatty sauces.
Contrary to what many health professionals believe, you can eat as many eggs as you like on this diet. If this is not possible, due to health reasons, then why not just go for the egg whites, as they have less fat than yokes.
You should eat low fat or diet dairy products, like low fat yogurt, cheese skimmed milk, cottage cheese etc. If you think this all sounds a little bland, then you’ll get a diet sheet telling you what spices and herbs you can add to your food, if any. Also, don’t forget to drink enough water.
As for drinks, as in most diets, drink a lot of water but herbal tea and English tea with skimmed milk is also allowed. Avoid sugar and see the diet sheet for sweeteners. You can also drink coffee with skimmed milk, but again no sugar and consult your diet information regarding sweeteners.
Sample menu Dukan Diet:
Coffee with skimmed milk and no sugar
200 g of low fat cottage cheese
a slice of lean turkey
A piece of grilled, lean chicken
A low fat yogurt for dessert
Once you have got past stage 1, then you move on to phase 2, called the “Cruise” phase or stage. During this period you don’t eat protein every day and you are allowed to eat lots of vegetables. You are supposed to eat protein one day and then protein and vegetables the next day and repeat.
The third stage of the Dukan diet is called “Consolidation”. During this phase you get to eat more normally, as you eat vegetables with protein every day. You are even allowed to add a few carbs during this stage. So, you can eat meals with past, rice, potatoes etc a few times a week. This will help your body to gradually get used to eating a balanced meal again.
The fourth and final phase is called “Stabilisation”. You eat normally for six days a week and then on Thursday you have to eat only protein.
