Vitamins and Anti Aging
The older we get the less capable our bodies become of processing food and this means that those of us who are slightly older have vitamin and mineral deficiencies that can lead to various diseases. Women in the menopause are more prone to the disease than men and younger women, although they can get it. This is due to a diminished oestrogen production. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and if people have a lack of vitamin D in their diet, then in they will only absorb a small amount of calcium from their food. You can find vitamin D in oily fish and fish oil. Or of course you can take vitamin tablets.
Another vitamin that is very important for anti aging is vitamin B, B6, B12 and folic acid. As many know, folic acid is especially important for pregnant women or women who want to get pregnant. It also helps regulate levels of unwanted substances like homocysteine in the blood, which if is present in high levels can cause diseases such as heart disease.
A lack of calcium can lead to osteoporosis in later life and thatís why itís important to make sure that you eat enough calcium rich foods early on in life and take calcium supplements when necessary.
Eat the Right Food
If you follow a healthy diet your whole life, are normal weight and have good genes, then you should be on the road to staying slim and healthy. The key is to eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, as they give you energy and also help prevent age related diseases such as heart disease. You should also eat healthy fats, such as olive oil and eat oily fish a few times a week.
Fruit and vegetables are also high in fibre, of which you should eat about 30g a day. Eating food high in fibre is not only good for your digestion, but also believed to prevent certain diseases, such as cancer, amongst others. Of course, you can always take supplements if you think you arenít getting enough fibre in your diet. Fruit and vegetables also contain a lot of essential vitamins and minerals. But, be careful to cook them in a healthy way, such as steaming, grilling (with a little omega rich oil) or boiling until crisp and not soggy. Avoid deep frying and try and eat fresh and organic wherever possible.
The recommended daily amount is five portions a day. But, eat more vegetables than fruit, as fruit can be high in sugar.
Antioxidants and the Anti Aging Diet
Have you heard of anti oxidants? Think of them as the bodyís natural guards, as they attack free radicals, which can attack cells in the body, cause a lot of problems and make us age quicker than normal. Fruit and vegetables are packed full of antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E.
Various research has been done into the subject of anti aging and shown that if you follow a diet that has a lot of anti oxidants, then your immune system will be stronger, helping to fight off disease. Also, the nervous system will benefit, as well as the brain and memory.

Being slim, fit and healthy are generally the key to staying younger longer.
Healthy and Unhealthy Fats
Many of you will have heard about Omega 3 oils. You can find omega rich margarine and other food in the supermarket. Oily fish like mackerel and salmon are very good for you, as they are high in these oils. The fat in red meat is bad and can lead to clogged arteries and high cholesterol, if consumed in large amounts. If you eat red meat then only do so one a week at the most, then choose lean meat and donít fry, but grill it or use it in a stew or casserole.
