Alcohol during the diet - how about it? Does alcohol hinder the effects of a diet? Can you lose weight if you still drink alcohol during your diet?

The answer to the question of if you can lose weight while still drinking alcohol on your diet is, it depends on the amount you drink and how often. That means, that a small beer or a glass of red wine occasionally is ok, but don’t overdo it.



Because:



-  pure alcohol has 7kcal per gram and increases the energy balance

-  alcohol is usually mixed with sweet drinks, e.g wine


-  alcohol hinders fat burning in the body and so you really shouldn’t drink that much when you are on a diet.


-  Drinking too much alcohol can also increase your appetite, think about when you get cravings for crisps, salted peanuts, and

  a curry late at night!!!!!


-  Too much alcohol is generally unhealthy


-  Alcohol can make it more difficult for the body to absorb essential nutrients and so lad to deficiencies


If you are going to drink then do it in moderation, or just a drink or two on the weekend, although many nutritionists will advise you to drink as little as possible, especially during the start of your diet.

The official guidelines state that men should not drink more than 3 to 4 units a day and women no more than 2 to 3 units. These guidelines are for people who are NOT dieting.

1/2 pint beer

1 glass wine

1 measure of spirits

The government recommended safe limits are:

Men 21 units per week

Women 14 units per week

A pint of ordinary strength lager (Carling Black Label, Fosters) - 2 units

A pint of strong lager (Stella Artois, Kronenbourg 1664) - 3 units

A pint of ordinary bitter (John Smith's, Boddingtons) - 2 units

A pint of best bitter (Fuller's ESB, Young's Special) - 3 units

A pint of ordinary strength cider (Woodpecker) - 2 units

A pint of strong cider (Dry Blackthorn, Strongbow) - 3 units

A 175ml glass of red or white wine - around 2 units

A pub measure of spirits - 1 unit

An alcopop (eg Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi Breezer, WKD, Reef) - around 1.5 units
